Chapter 29 Trial
In the corner of a bar, Arkado and McVlon sat there, looking at the old Tom opposite.
"I lack a captain, a brave and fearless captain." Arcado said softly, "McVlon said that you have been to sea before. Do you have a good candidate?"
"I didn't expect that you chose to work on shipping after taking a large amount of money. This is a dangerous industry. If you have to fight against storms and deal with the reef whirlpool, you can't try it by buying a broken ship.
"You were wrong, Mr. Tom." McVaron smiled and said, "First, the ship was not bought by us, but designed and built by Arcado; secondly, the ship is not a broken ship."
"What did you design?" Old Tom's eyes lit up, drank a glass of wine and asked, "Is it as cleverly designed as your crane?"
"No, Mr. Tom." Arcado smiled and said, "It's a more fascinating design than that. If you see that ship, you will fall madly in love with it. We all call him the Black Pearl."
"If possible, please take me to have a look." Old Tom is a little curious. Does Arcado really have the power to make his wish come true? He felt his heart beating violently.
"Come with us." Arcado got up. Then McVallon also stood up. Old Tom looked at the two young people in front of him. Will their future be sunny? Or are you full of thorns and have the courage and strength to accompany such a young man?
Three people came to the dock and saw the dark Black Pearl docked there.
Old Tom looked back at Arcado and McVallon and asked strangely, "Hasn't it finished installing all the masts yet?" The sail on the front mast hasn't hung yet. Are you a little anxious to find the captain now?
"Hahahaha." McVaron laughed all the time.
"Come with me, Mr. Tom." Arcado continued to walk to the dock, and McVaron quickly followed. Old Tom continued to follow in puzzledly and soon came to the dock.
"Acado, you're back. Where's the captain? Have you found it? Meadow greeted her happily.
"This is our captain." Arcado pointed to old Tom and said, "Come with me. Let's go on the boat and have a look, and you will understand."
On the ship, four sailors were busy, and several blacksmiths were helping to paint. The old blacksmith stood in the bow with his apprentice Hubert, looking curiously at the brand-new strange ship, while the hired ship designer was explaining something to them.
When old Tom came to the side of the boat, he felt that the ship was special, and the all-metal side of the boat almost made old Tom fall to the ground.
When old Tom stood on the deck with the help of McVlon, he was stunned by the scene in front of him. The main cabin was illuminated by magic and delivered orders in a strange and effective way such as microphones and bells.
What surprised him most was that the ship was powered in a strange way without wind power, and the whole ship was made of steel.
After visiting the whole iron ship, two people said that they didn't want to get off the ship. One was an old Tom, and the other was actually an hired ship designer.
"I am the captain of this ship. I will never disembark unless I die." Old Tom held the railing on the starboard and said to Arcado, "I swear in the name of the sea, I will serve you until the sea dries up."
"I'm going to go to sea with the most perfect design in my life. No one wants to stop me. I can draw charts, mop the floor and wash clothes. Please don't let me disembark. I'm as willing to die for you as the captain." The hired ship designer who also held the railing said so.
So, on November 13, the year of the creation of the gods and the end of 1572 of the Holy Empire, the Black Pearl was first tested.
Because the rented dock was cheap and quite remote, and it sailed in the early morning, it was not noticed.
"Air to the east, and the test begins." Old Tom put down his telescope and gave a serious order.
The helmsman is one of the four recruited sailors named Morgan. He held the steering wheel and looked at the captain meticulously. McVlon walked to the microphone and shouted, "The second power room is started."
"Report that the second power room has been started." A sailor's voice came from below.
"Drive forward, lookout, and tell me when you observe the port of Mahu Lake, it was exactly one nautical mile at that time." Old Tom said.
Not long later, the lookout reported that Mahu Port was parallel to the starboard.
"Adjust the speedometer, and now the speed is 17 knots, which is slightly faster than expected." Arcado recorded the problem points. He shouted at the microphone that wrote in the kitchen, "Meadow, prepare lunch for everyone. We can't go back to Mahu at noon."
"The swing of the ship is too serious and the center of gravity is too high. The ballast needs to be increased." Old Tom said.
"The waves on the bow are a little serious. It will be better to add an extra layer of iron plates on both sides."
One by one, the problems were pointed out by old Tom, which made Arcado anxious to record. He now knows how complicated it is to design a good ship.
"Let's conduct a full-speed navigation test." Old Tom shouted.
"The third power room starts." McVaron shouted at the microphone, and then the Black Pearl accelerated significantly again.
"The adjusted speedometer shows that the ship's speed is now 22 knots." Arcado said to old Tom.
"My God, 21 is the speed record of the fastest warship Chasing Wind." Ai Wen, the seaman next to him and the hired ship designer, cheered loudly: "Our ship has broken the record."
"Calm down, seaman, or I'll leave you into the sea." Old Tom looked no worse than Elvin's proud look, but he didn't shout.
"Continue to accelerate." Old Tom looked into the distance and ordered.
"The fourth power room starts."
"The speed has increased again, and the speedometer shows that the ship's speed is close to 24 knots." Arcado said.
"The hull began to shake violently, and the speed is the limit."
"The second deck reports that we have the sound of metal distortion here, and the ship is about to fall off."
"Power room report, it's too hot here, the temperature has been rising, and we're going to suffocate."
The calls in the microphone are one after another.
"The first power room is shut down, and the second power room is shut down, and we will reduce the speed." Old Tom said, "Check every place carefully, report the leakage, and report the deformed parts to Arcado."
"Power room report, our temperature has dropped."
"The second deck reported that the sound of distortion and extrusion has stopped, and no leakage and deformation have been found so far."
"It seems that the limit speed of the black pearl is 22 knots, and there will be a problem no matter how fast it is." Old Tom said to Arcado.
"Well, that's right. This is a little far from my design speed. I originally expected it to run 30 knots."
"Dear Rudolf Arcado, I, the blacksmith Hubert, solemnly swear to you here that I will serve you all my life until the end of the world, or if I die, you will always be my master." Hubert, who boarded the ship next to him, knelt on one knee and said sincerely to Arcado.
The blacksmith looked at his apprentice with a laugh, and then said to Arcado, "This is the biggest gamble in Quint's life, and the happiest gamble I have lost in my life. You let me lose the whole blacksmith's shop, but you have shown me the way forward for my blacksmith career, young man, if you There is a shortage of blacksmiths, and I will be happy to work with you on the ship.
