Chapter 142 Wounds at Night
Company E stopped in the suburbs of Eindhoven and began to dig a puddle to prepare for the night. This makes many people keep complaining. No one expected that after the warm hospitality of the Dutch, they would lie in the mud for another night. This feeling is tantamount to falling from heaven to hell, which is really unacceptable.
"Where are the Germans? Who can tell me why we still have to dig a scattering pit? I didn't see the shadow of the Germans!" James? Ellie kept complaining while digging the scattering pit. Obviously, he didn't work hard.
"Soldier, it's much more meaningful to use the time you complain about to dig a soldier's pit than this. On this road, we may meet Germans at any time. They are staring at each other and may appear in front of us at any time and shoot at you!" Suddenly, a voice came from behind Ellie, and his tone was a little harsh.
He looked back and saw that it was Captain Winters. He couldn't help saluting quickly and said, "I'm sorry, Captain, I'll hurry up!"
Winters nodded and then continued to patrol other places. Obviously, there was not much fighting along the way, and from time to time there were enthusiastic Dutch people with delicious wine, food and fruits, which made these soldiers completely lose their vigilance, whether they were veterans or recruits. They must have thought it was a wonderful trip around Europe.
The calm night looks very deep. There are no stars and clouds in the sky. The weather is not very good. But without the gunfire of the Germans and the cold guns of the snipers, this night is a beautiful night.
Winters checked each sentry in person. He couldn't sleep and closed his eyes as if he could see the shadow of more than 30 brothers. He could only use non-stop walking to relieve this feeling of boredom.
"Dick!" Someone stopped him from behind.
Winters turned around and looked at the man. He couldn't help smiling and said, "Nick, if you always mess with me up, Sink must have to consider whether to go to the second battalion as a staff officer."
"Even if Sink knows, he will open one eye and close the other. He knows that you need a partner now!" Nixon smiled and said, "A person who can calm you down. Obviously, I'm the best candidate like this!"
"Congratulations, you can go from the battalion to the company!" Winters glanced at him, then turned his head and looked at the dark night sky in front of him. "Yes, I've been a little distracted these two days. Now it's the second day of airborne. And the British First Paratrooper Division has no contact at all. According to the original plan, they have already occupied the Anum Bridge.
"Do you believe that their plan will succeed?" Nick stepped forward and stood side by side with Winters. "At least we are not making good progress now. The Germans are obviously ready. Although our actions were unexpected yesterday. I don't believe that the First Division has occupied Anem.
"Me too!" There was a deep worry in Winters's tone.
Nixon looked at him and said, "Dick, I know what's on your mind, and I will think the same. More than thirty brothers can never disappear silently. Don't worry about Parks, he is an excellent commander. The most important thing for you now is to keep your clear mind and keen reaction, and don't let your brothers here be damaged!"
"I know!" Winters nodded.
The two of them didn't say anything. They walked to the edge of a few trees, leaned against the trunk, looked at the night sky, and looked at the brothers nestled in the scattered soldier pit. The air of the night gradually became a little solemn.
This night was absolutely relaxing for the brothers of E Company. They passed peacefully, just like an ordinary night in the countryside. The chirping of summer insects seemed to be like a nocturne in their ears.
But this night, the first brigade of the British First Airborne Division was not so lucky. Yesterday's and today's daytime attacks hurt them a certain amount of vitality. Obviously, attacking the south side of the bridge in full view of the public during the day will only suffer greater setbacks. So they decided to attack at night and use the cover of the night to break through the southern end of the bridge in one fell swoop.
The British paratroopers felt out of the buildings and houses used as bunkers during the day. They touched a fortress at the bridge, which was once a huge obstacle for two attacks, and many paratroopers fell in front of the fortress.
The British troops of the brigade hid on the bridge, and they lay down.
A paratrooper lieutenant and three paratroopers quietly thought that the fortress of the bridge was approaching.
"Why us?" One of the soldiers asked in a low voice.
"Because you won the prize!" The lieutenant replied, "Don't talk nonsense. We can only move forward if we kill this."
The four people approached the fortress quickly and were found by the Germans about ten meters away. The machine gun shot in the direction they were moving forward. The plan to get them close to the fortress failed.
"Are you sure of this distance?" The lieutenant and three paratroopers hid behind the pier and said.
"I don't know, I have to try!"
"Okay, God bless!" The lieutenant said, "Grenade!"
"still--" The four people got up and threw out the grenade in the rain of machine guns.
A few explosions, and the grenade exploded near the fortress. They bounced out of the wall of the fortress before they exploded and were not thrown into the observation of the fortress.
"Damn it!" The lieutenant couldn't help scolding. Obviously, he was very dissatisfied with the bomb. The German machine gun could not be found, and the target was shooting everywhere.
"Do it again!" The lieutenant whispered, and then raised his fist, "still--"
The grenade flew out again, but the Germans also saw them. The machine gun shot over without hesitation. On the spot, two soldiers were hit without a bullet and fell to the ground.
"Boom--" The grenade was still not thrown into the observation port. The lieutenant patted his head in chagrin and was about to greet the remaining one. He threw it again. He had already risked his life.
Suddenly, a huge explosion sounded near the fortress, and then a huge flame rose into the air, and the fortress was lifted into the sky by the explosion. The explosions came one after another, constantly bursting out huge fire.
"God, lieutenant, we blew up their ammunition depot!" The remaining soldier shouted in surprise, "Haha, God is on our side, Lieutenant. They are going to be finished!"
"Yes, there is something wrong!" The lieutenant shouted with joy, then rushed out, waved his hand to the British army lurking behind him, and dealt with him, "Brothers, go and kill the Germans and let them know how powerful we are!" With that, he rushed forward with his head. When the British army behind saw that the arsenal of the bridgehead was blown up, they all cheered and rushed forward with the lieutenant. Obviously, this is a good start and can stimulate morale. This stimulated the British army to rush to the south of the bridge desperately.
"Dubu--" Lieutenant Colonel Gefu kept blowing the whistle to gather more British troops. They want to succeed in one fell swoop. Now this is the best opportunity in a few days. The Germans lost the cover of the bridgehead, and the firepower will be greatly reduced. And it is easier to provide cover for the British army at night, so that they can rush to the south of the bridge smoothly.
"Boom--" A flare exploded in the air, and then the shining firelight illuminated the British soldiers on the bridge clearly. Then the German machine guns and tanks opened fire. Sparks from the barrel and muzzle, as well as flares, shine around like day. The dense firepower of the Germans frantically harvested the lives of the British.
Lieutenant Colonel Gefu ran in the middle. He saw the machine gun of the German tank with a fire tongue. Through the flare, he could see that the British army kept falling, and then the British army kept filling in. Despite the heavy casualties, he knew that this was the best chance. If it was lost, the British army would lose its ability to attack forever.
He jumped forward. And he kept shouting at the British army around him.
"Let's go, guys! Don't let the Germans defeat it. We are about to break through them!" He kept boosting morale, and then took the lead in charging the Germans.
Obviously, the Germans were also scared by the desperate attacks of the British. Seeing that the British army was getting closer and closer, some of them retreated in horror. These British people are killing themselves. They are like a bunch of crazy people.
Ge Fu saw a German. He held a rifle and shot at the British army. He was approaching.
Close, close...
Lieutenant Colonel Gefu flew and stabbed the German's body with a bayonet with a rifle. In the alternating light of light and dark, he saw the blood splashed out of the German and heard the screams of fear when he was dying.
Finally, the British army paid huge casualties and met the German soldiers guarding the bridge.
The bayonet blew up the bleeding hole on the body fiercely, and then splashed blood.
Ge Fu didn't know how many Germans he had stabbed, but they seemed to fall one after another like endless cockroaches, while the British troops around Lieutenant Colonel Gefu were reduced one by one.
Gunshots, shouts and screams are mixed together.
"Bang--" A gunshot came in Ge Fu's ear. When he hurriedly turned around, there was a sharp pain in his waist, and then he saw a German raising a rifle at him.
German soldiers pulled the bolt in an orderly manner, and then aimed again, with a blank face.
Lieutenant Colonel Gefu wanted to raise a gun at him, but he couldn't use his hand at all. He wanted to dodge, but his body was as heavy as carrying a bag of potatoes, and he couldn't move at all.
" Bang--" The gunshots sounded again.
The blood flower bloomed in the front chest of Lieutenant Colonel Gefu. He was hit to the ground by the usual name of the bullet, and then looked at the body that kept falling on the road. A British [***] man's face also fell on the bridge, and then the flare could see his sad eyes when he was struggling to death, which was the last memory of Lieutenant Colonel Gefu.
